After a successful pilot with leading companies Asahi Kasei, Arçelik, Borealis, EVBox, Itochu, Marubeni, Neste, Philips Domestic Appliances, and Shell, we recently launched our newest product MassBalancer, the mass balance bookkeeping automation software for companies that are currently certified with ISCC PLUS, or are preparing to do so.

The mass balance approach is a chain of custody model that allows businesses to trace material flows and gradually replace fossil feedstock with sustainable materials.

However, the mass balance approach requires accurate and scalable bookkeeping to prove sustainability claims. Companies can try to build a complicated mass balance accounting software themselves, or they can achieve better results quickly with MassBalancer.

What is MassBalancer?

MassBalancer is an automated solution for mass balance bookkeeping that is able to accommodate complex, multi-tiered supply chains in a scalable, more accurate way. It allows you to manage multiple sites and units in one place, and can be used by anyone along the supply value chain in the plastics and petrochemicals industry.

Using MassBalancer will bring many benefits to your organisation:

  • Save time: offload time-consuming, manual work to our trusted system, where you can book and allocate incoming materials using pre-defined processes and conversion factors, and send outgoing materials and generate Sustainability Declarations in just a few clicks
  • Save money and resources: avoid expensive mistakes due to human error and drastically reduce costs from consultant services for ISCC PLUS audits
  • Simplicity: manage balances for all your sites and units from one place, with a clear overview of your material balances and granular data on each site and unit
  • Scale your operations: integrate with your ERP system to scale your mass balance operation and set yourself apart from your competitors.

Mass balancing with complicated spreadsheets and PDF files sent via emails makes bookkeeping slow, prone to errors, and ultimately not scalable. While some large organisations have built their own MassBalancer-like systems to solve their bookkeeping needs, we don’t think all companies should have to keep building their own software tools or use clumsy spreadsheets. Not only is it difficult, it is also a costly and time-consuming endeavour that not every company can undertake.

Despite the complexity involved, companies must adapt to the increasing demand for certified sustainable material. When done effectively it can generate more value for the business, but when not properly set up, it can create painful administrative burdens. This is why we built MassBalancer as a universal solution that any supplier and OEM can use.

“Certification will become more digital in the future. It will allow certification schemes to simplify the auditing process of supply chain actors and reduce the risk of mistakes. Companies will have an easier way to show compliance and adhere to auditing rules,” said Jan Henke from ISCC. “We are excited to have tested Circularise’s traceability software on ISCC procedures.”

How does MassBalancer work?

Once you register an account, you can access the dashboard through any internet browser. Alternatively, you can connect to our API to support mass balance bookkeeping at scale.

Step 1: Register account

Set up your company, your sites, and units. Upload all the supporting ISCC PLUS certificates.

Step 2: Set up conversion factors (which stay confidential)

Define material units and processes. Select input and output materials, and set up conversion factors. Sensitive information will remain confidential.

Step 3: Manage balances and generate sustainability declarations

Easily manage your balances through your inventories, and automatically pass sustainability declarations from input to output.

  • Receive incoming sustainability declarations

Fill in the form to book incoming sustainability declarations and pick a raw material category: Bio, Bio-Circular, Circular. If your supplier is also on Circularise, this process will be entirely automated. All your incoming material will appear in the Input Inventory and be visible in the Balance page.

  • Allocate Balances

Select materials and convert them using your pre-defined recipes and conversion rates.

  • Send Outgoing Materials

Your material output will appear in your Output Inventory. Sustainability Declarations and outgoing materials can be sent on to your customer with a simple click. Once it is sent, a declaration is automatically generated and can be downloaded.

Step 4: Generate reports with unit-level granularity

Have a clear overview of mass balance bookkeeping records and granular data on each site or unit. Automatically generate quarterly and annual reports in pdf format, with all of the associated sustainability declarations in a zip file. This will make the auditing process easier for you and your auditors.
